Now, About That ...

A good bridge makes good neighbours:

Dear President Donald J. Trump, on behalf of all Canadians, I would like to say: You’re welcome for building you a $6.4-billion bridge. You can thank us later.

We appreciate the wonderful relationship our two countries have had since we burnt down the cottage that U.S. presidents used to call home, precipitating the construction of the illustrious mansion you now reside in, and are more than happy to show our gratitude by building the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting our two glorious countries, including the US$250-million (C$338-million) customs plaza on the American side.

Many of us read your Truth Social post on Monday criticizing the bridge being built between Windsor, Ont., and Detroit, and saying that the U.S. “should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset.” But we don’t take it personally. After all, who among us hasn’t gone on a regrettable social media rant about our neighbours?

Addressing your point about ownership, you’ll be happy to know that the bridge will be jointly owned by Canada and Michigan — which, in case you forgot, is a northern American state that voted for you in the last election. And once the construction cost is paid off, the toll revenue will be split between Ottawa and Lansing. This is basically a license to print money, kind of like a casino, only unlike the ones you owned in Atlantic City, we’ll make sure it doesn’t go bankrupt.

What the hell is going on here, guys?
