You want to know why Catholics are mad about The Da Vinci Code, among other things? Read these actual posts from a forum run by canoe.ca (which may or may not be the actual opinions of the owners):

Any wonder why? Spelling, factual and theological mistakes and all. The last acceptable prejudice. None of this is criticism or educated opinions. It's the same crap all over again. Nothing ever changes. Of course Catholics are angry. Not only are they and their religion attacked but there isn't any freshness in the stupidity on what is so obviously noxious bigotry.

It's fiction being sold as fact and then covered up as "over-reacting" that gets to most Catholics. They say "it's fiction, so just relax" but then they spout how this supposed "fiction" is innocently aimed at helping people "see things in a new light" and to "re-consider what they thought was truth". When Christians get offended, they double-back to their "it's only fiction, just relax" tactics. It's a major manipulation and insult to my intelligence. That's what pisses me off.

I don't know what is more bothersome- the lies that have been uttered over and over throughout the centuries or the ever-patronising "there-there-ing". The simple truth of the matter is that anti-Catholicism IS the last acceptable prejudice. One can't say and do the things to another group that one can say and do to the Catholic Church and its adherents. This isn't a paranoid rambling. It is actually going on.
