Halloween Week: Rearview Mirror

It was a normal morning for Janet.

Until she got into her car!

Halloween Week: Time to Feed...

...on soul cakes.
Begging for soul cakes is considered the precursor of modern day trick-or-treating. Soul cakes are small, round spiced cakes representing a soul of a person. During the Middle Ages on All Souls' Day, children and the poor would go house-to-house begging for soul cakes. They would receive one upon promising to pray for the soul of a certain person.

(for something really scary, visit cakewrecks.blogspot.com. Yes, people can make fondant into awful shapes.)

Halloween Week: Mid-week Mellow

There's a fairy tale in here somewhere.

Maybe fiction is stranger than life!
Sidebar: I had a dog similar to this. If your grandmother had treats in her cabin in the woods, there wouldn't be any left if you let him in the house!

Halloween Week: By the Power of Fossilized Skulls!

This is kind of Halloween-ish but more related to paleontology.

The fossilized skull of a pliosaur was discovered in Dorset, England. The pliosaur was a predator that lived in the oceans over 150 million years ago.
Speaking of England, it's John Cleese's birthday today.

Halloween Week: the Attack of the Cute Costumes!

Are you wondering what to dress your Neo-NATO representative this year? Look no more! This site has some very cute ideas.
I picked this one out for my niece at one stage.

Halloween Week: the Beginning

The bewitching season is upon us so write all of this down!
There is Halloween baking to do, ghost ships to spot, the Klingon military to join (very North Korean-esque) and science journals to pore over (is there a basis for zombies in science? Find out).
So much to do!

Friends No More

Why did we offend the cash-cow China with its human rights abuses and totalitarian one-party system? Trudeau didn't do it. Jean Chretien and his coal mogul, Maurice Strong, didn't do it.

Where did we go wrong?

The Other Side of China

These pictures were passed along to me.

Below are three photographs of women being executed. Because of the draconian one-child policy in China, women can have only one baby (two under certain circumstances). These women had three children. They are now being executed because of that.

WARNING: these pictures are graphic and disturbing.

Mid-Week Mellow

(sigh)

Some Stuff

Directly from the Nobel Peace Prize horse's mouth:

Obama on the killer Iranian regime murdering their own people in the street:

"The Iranians are having a robust debate."

Obama on defending genocide (2007):

"The United States cannot use its military to solve humanitarian problems and that preventing a potential genocide in Iraq isn't a good enough reason to keep U.S. forces there.'

Obama justifying killing babies who survive an abortion:

"Essentially adding an additional doctor who then has to be called in an emergency situation to come in and make these assessments is really designed simply to burden the original decision."

Dude, the Asian hate, not cool (warning: language within):

You’re a sick BITCH. Are you aware that you almost causes the death of an elementary school teacher the other day with your bullshit. You are a disgrace to Black people. I’m sorry .That’s right . You’re not black. Is your husband a white man that works for the Insurance Cartel ?

I apologise for the language within but if someone insists on being a self-righteous racist jerk, then they deserve to be exposed as such.

Mrs. Malkin apparently uses MAC Lustreglass. I prefer Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer (pomegranate) myself. This kind of shallow talk is far more stimulating than the preceding racist diatribe, non?

Geishas used to use lip tint made from crushed safflower petals- if that matters, and it probably does.

I saw this last night on The Michael Coren Show. Lord Monkton, former policy advisor to Margaret Thatcher, gave delightfully sour talk about the global warming debate. Very interesting and rousing. Watch it for yourself.

Question

How are North Koreans supposed to clog their arteries with fattening American food under a dictatorial system that keeps them oppressed and hungry?

You want more fries with that, Mr. Kim? How about a hot dog, Miss
Park?

Once condemned as evil "U. S. imperialist" fare, Western-style fast
food is now available in North Korea thanks to a Singaporean entrepreneur who is
already drawing up expansion plans just months after opening his first
outlet.

Finding Your Hidden Racist

Whatever you may think of Michelle Malkin (whether you find her acerbic or a breath of fresh air) pales when one reads her hate mail.

Finding someone personally noxious is one thing. Fair enough. Sending mail (and signing it, too!) with boorish racist and misogynistic blather is another thing altogether.

Mrs. Malkin e-mailed Charisse Carney-Nunes who purportedly uploaded on Youtube some tripey song about Obama as sung by school children. Instead of e-mailing Mrs. Malkin back to discuss this issue rationally, Miss Carney-Nunes gave her account to the Washington Post.

The floodgates were opened.

Here are a few letters written by some rather displeased individuals (strong language within):

I feel bad for your kids; to be raised in such a hate-filled household must be devastating.
I wish somebody could call CPS on your Asian ass before your children develop the same hatred running through your Filipino veins.

Michelle Malkin, she’s just a brainless tit. Instead of pissing in the toilet, she pisses in the media. She’s Rush Limbaugh’s girlfriend on the side.

I reviewed your image this am and I noticed your thick lips. Please tell me you’re not BLACK. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.

I suppose by now we are all used to hearing how George Bush is like Hitler and Sarah Palin is stupid and conservatives are racist.Perhaps we should parse these statements carefully.

George Bush never sued or imprisoned anyone for the frankly awful slurs against him. Hitler, on the other hand, had people strangled with piano wire. Sarah Palin may lack the serene tones of a mezzo-soprano but she left her state in better condition than what she inherited. If, as the slander goes, conservatives are racist, perhaps one could explain "Asian @$$", "Filipino veins" and "thick lips".

Race should be discussed frankly but it also shouldn't be used to disqualify someone on what is a superficial quality. Yes, Obama is black but it is not his skin colour that makes him a useless president now. Could one also make the same observation about Mrs. Malkin? Yes, her parents are Filipino. So? Does her racial heritage exempt her from making some rather trenchant commentary? Of course not. This is a typical trope of liberals whose arguments fail to muster thinking individuals into appropriate action. If someone looks bad, his credibility is called into question. The slanderer looks good by comparison. The waters are muddied and no one knows what to think.

Furthermore, I believe those who truly fear race are the same people who bait it. If Mrs. Malkin's arguments are stupid, is it really because of her race? To even bring it up like that smacks of racism. What fear and loathing one must have to speak in such a way.

I would think in the twenty-first century, we went beyond that.

Happy Thanksgiving Day

(pre-steamed seongpyeon, moon-shaped rice confections, for Chu-sok, Korean Thanksgiving)

Enjoy the day and remember to be grateful for all you have, even if it doesn't seem like much.

Five New Saints

Pope Benedict XVI canonised five new saints this Sunday, one of whom was Father Damien who worked with the lepers in Hawaii in the nineteenth century.

We have five new saints to intercede for us.

But according to the popular press, that's not what's important.

Obama, who was born and spent part of his childhood in Hawaii, has said he
remembers stories about Damien caring for people suffering from leprosy, also
known as Hansen's disease, and its stigma.

Pope Benedict, successor of Saint Peter who himself was appointed by Jesus to be the rock upon which the Church is built, doesn't need empty platitudes to celebrate the cause of a saint who gave the rest of his life to the sick and forgotten. That can't be stressed enough. What is bound or loosed on earth is the territory of those who have the right to act piously, not pretend when there is a teleprompter around.

Popular press: stop campaigning for a useless president. It embarrasses us all. It's really quite unnecessary.

When Dealing with Children

…be sure to speak in a firm tone of voice.

Watch as these overgrown infants not only tell an invited speaker to leave but attempt to drown out his prepared remarks with kindergarten songs. Their recollected repertoire is not just rude to the speaker and those who waited to hear him but is indicative of an attitude that, no doubt, permeates other facets of their lives. Instead of listening to the speaker, they tell him to leave, not ask. They didn’t even have the sense to not go and “waste their time” (why study when one can go out drinking or damage private property or interrupt a prepared speech some people might actually want to hear?). I imagine they forgot that this is Canada, not North Korea. If they made the conscious decision to stay and listen to the speaker, with what rhetorical devices were they planning on using to eviscerate the speaker’s logic? Was there a cogent retort other than “Old MacDonald”? Probably not. I’m sure that’s how the Treaty of Versailles was settled. Did they consider the audience? I mean- where is Simon Cowell when you need him?

What’s particularly irritating is that is how some who are presumably adults in a post-secondary environment think they should act. It’s bad enough that these students have just grazed the bar of mediocrity set for them and their parents don’t appear to be ashamed of their behaviour. This utterly immature stunt- which will repeat itself at any event- is, I’m sure, seen as cute, anarchical and revolutionary. They’ll strut around ruining this or that event and be so confident that screaming and singing stupid songs is just how responsible and politically aware adults behave. And they’ll want to be treated like adults, too. How far will that sense of entitlement get them when other adults avoid them like the plague? After all, useful idiots might find a niche in the streets for the truly lazy social radicals who would rather others, not them, get arrested but they’re no fun to talk to. At the end of the day, these students’ absurdist conduct isn’t ironic but just plain stupid.

Other Events the Students Can Ruin

Free Tibet Rallies: nothing underscores the unbearable wrongness of China’s brutal occupation of Tibet like “BINGO Was His Name-O”. Why stand in front of a tank in Tiananmen Square when you can prove your mettle by making “BINGO” a fun sing-along for bludgeoned students and bloggers as they are being dragged off to prison?

End Poverty Rallies: don’t let crying homeless children ruin “She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain”.

African Economic Conferences: there is nothing racist or insensitive about interrupting Dombisa Moyo or any other African activist by singing “Jimmy Crack Corn”. Maybe they’ll find it as amusing as- oh- interrupting an invited speaker and telling him to leave.

Funerals: break the somber occasion with laughter. “Ding-dong, the Witch is Dead” is wont to set the room in a roar.

Believe me- they’ll do it.

The End of Meritocracy

Even less worthy than Julia Roberts or George Clooney and less capable than a jock teacher in a secondary school is Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize. His major achievements since taking office have been: nothing.

That's right- nothing.

He inspires peace
.

Iran warns Obama against Bushite talk

The same country Obama wanted to reach out to without pre-conditions warns the Chosen One.

To be fair, Obama was warned by France and Israel- not to trust Iran.

Oh yes- there's also the dwindling economy, the now defunct missile defense system in eastern Europe, the over-reaching and impossible health-care plan and the failed Olympic bid.

This is yet another lesson in meritocracy. It doesn't matter how smart you are or how hard you've worked; you clearly don't deserve to be rewarded for your efforts.

How demoralising it must be for the ones not chosen for this prestigious award:

Sima Samar, women's rights activist in Afghanistan
Ingrid Betancourt, French-Colombian ex-hostage held for six years
Dr. Denis Mukwege, doctor, founder and head of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo
Handicap International and Cluster Munition Coalition
Hu Jia, a human rights activist and an outspoken critic of the Chinese government
Wei Jingsheng, who spent 17 years in Chinese prisons for urging reforms of China's communist system

See- we can actually prove these guys did something. Obama- not so.

However, as I believe Hitler is in hell, I also believe that slacking narcissists can't charm everyone forever. People will get tired of you- before 2012.

North Koreans In Russian Gulags

(hat tip: One Free Korea and Fred Fry International)

Russians are using North Korean slave labour. It shouldn't come as a surprise if it does strike one as horrendous.

"The Koreans work year round with two days off per year," he told me. "All the other days are working days no matter what the weather conditions, they always work.

In case we forget how "lucky" we are:

Residents can take their garbage to any of three transfer stations. But once they get there, some are finding it isn't easy to just dump their trash.

On Tuesday morning at the Ingram transfer station near Keele Street and Ingram Drive, in the city's west end, people were being told there's a three-bag limit.

Striking CUPE workers milling about at the entrance won't give any help, though some are directing people where to put their trash.

Some residents who were blocked from driving into the stations had to lug their refuse in on foot.

Those who left their bags at the gate were handed $380 tickets for illegal dumping.

The coup-de-grace:

Canada Day events threatened

The city's annual Pride Parade will go ahead this weekend, but deputy city manager Sue Cork said Monday that if the strike continues "all city-run Canada Day events" on July 1 will be cancelled.

All for:

City workers, even the unskilled kind, make a considerable hourly wage. Janitors make at least $19.56/hour, litter pickers $21.11/hour, garbage collectors $24.14/hour, meter readers $26.58/hour, bus and subway drivers $26.58/hour and bylaw enforcement officers $28.67/hour, to cite a few examples.

Is CUPE going to have a strike for the North Koreans who aren't paid $21 an hour and who can't add up their sick leave? I know Russia doesn't care about them but surely the people who ruined Canada Day for everyone must have a shred of decency.

Well, no, they don't.

Yes, We Can Has A Cheeseburger!

Hope and change we can believe in- at last!

Hey!

What was meant to be a word to describe mishmash is too slacker for some.

Who would have thought?

When the Babies Don't Get Their Bottles

How disappointing it must have been for the Obamas (shattered! It was a blow to him! It was about him!) and Oprah Winfrey when it was announced that Rio de Janiero would get the 2016 Olympics and not them. How their pride must have been wounded when they realised that not even their waning star power was enough to convince the IOC that Chicago- their home town- was an ideal place for the war without guns (tm George Orwell). Granted, the world could be on the verge of great nuclear conflict and magazines bearing one's name must be sold but still...not even the Olympics? Could the IOC not see the glow about the great Chicago Triumvirate? Could they not? Nope. Brazil's got the Olympics. Burned. Someone get the Obamas and Oprah some antiseptic gel and cold blankets because they got burned.

(Thanks a bunch for the pic, Michelle Malkin)

Here's some soothing bossa nova music to get you through this.

Remember when David Letterman made a rather perverted gag about Sarah Palin's fourteen year old daughter and he tried to weasel out of apologising even though his cheap and tawdry crack was reprehensible? Guess who fell off the wagon again. Yes, he was blackmailed by a total moron but really- who cheats on his wife with young interns who could possibly say no if they accepted they couldn't sue for harassment?

Following swiftly on the heels of the Roman Polanski fiasco, the adoring masses who are willing to forget these enormous moral improprieties are less adoring in so far as they are just ignorant. Why anyone would look to celebrities for their social and political mores stuns me even to this day but to remotely forgive this? This stuff is the reason why people lose all hope in humanity. One director- although quite accomplished- drugged and raped a thirteen year old girl. Though Whoopi Goldberg, clearly one of the West's greatest legal minds, is willing to forgive him, a court of law- whose role ostensibly is to judge Polanski's guilt or innocence- may not. Now Letterman has been proven not just a bore but a boor.

How about we treat celebrities as they should be treated- people who are overpaid and have no bloody business telling anyone anything, least of all what morals to espouse and for whom or what cause to vote. They don't work for NASA for a good reason.

The Words of Mao

(taken from Mao: the Unknown Story by Jung Chang and Jon Halliday)

"My student Mao Tse Tung said that... his clan...are mostly peasants, and it is easy for them to get rich." (from the diary of Professor Yang Chang-chi)

"I do not agree with the view that to be moral, the motive of one's action has to be benefiting others. Morality does not have to be defined in relation to others...People like me want to...satisfy our hearts to the full, and in so doing we automatically have the most valuable moral codes. Of course there are people and objects in the world, they are all there only for me." (written when he was twenty-four years old)

"One or two beaten to death, no big deal." (quoted as saying in 1927)

"Why are you women so afraid of giving birth? Look at , giving birth for her is as easy as a hen dropping an egg." (a comment made by Mao after his second wife, Guiyuan, gave birth while on the Long March and made to abandon the child)

"Please, could the Soviet government satisfy our arms order for Korea in 1953, and our orders for arms industries." (a cable to Stalin, December 1952)

"...half of China may well have to die." (said during the great famine in the late fifties)

"Peking is not chaotic enough....Peking is too civilised." (said during the violence of the Cultural Revolution, 1966)

"I feel ill. Call the doctors." (Mao's last words)

China

Since Mao Tse Tung took over China sixty years ago, people have died in famines, been killed outright, arrested, tortured, persecuted for their religion and censored. There have also been forced abortions, infanticide and organ harvesting. China has made North Korea its vassal state and North Korean refugees returned to death squads. Tibet remains under the thumb of an ethnically, linguistically and politically different power. The economic rise of China has come at a great cost to its own people and met with indifference from the West.

While Mao is rotting in hell, what will become of China, an international human rights disaster?

China Quick Facts: in 2006, the average Chinese worker was paid fifty-seven cents an hour. That wage, according to some sources, increased only slightly.

A study done in 2005 found that only fifteen percent of the unskilled labourers interviewed had an educated beyond the mandated nine years.

According to Chinese statistics, 11.4 workers die for every 100,000 on the job. In the US, only 3.7 fatal injuries per 100,000 were recorded.

By the time of Mao Tse Tung's death, over seventy million people had died.
