Hamilton NDP Candidate Poised to Win Despite Anti-semitic Comments

The electorate tolerates this person:

Sarah Jama, the NDP candidate for Thursday’s provincial byelection in Hamilton Centre, is strongly favoured to win, despite a history of antisemitic and other radical remarks, because her party affiliation virtually guarantees it, observers say.

B’nai Brith is calling for Ontario New Democrat Party (ONDP) leader party leader Marit Stiles to withdraw Jama’s candidacy, despite the cost, to show that her party stands against antisemitism.

“We realize that, with the byelection imminent and slated for March 16, withdrawing Ms. Jama’s candidacy would mean that the ONDP would likely lose the seat,” said B’nai Brith CEO Michael Mostyn.

“Nonetheless, Ms. Stiles needs to do the principled thing. There should be no room in the Legislature for a member whose demonizing of the Jewish state will only lead to more hate aimed at Jews in Ontario.”

Voters go to the polls in Hamilton Centre on Thursday to fill a vacancy left by former Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, who stepped aside shortly after last spring’s provincial election after failing to make inroads against Doug Ford’s PCs.
