And the Rest of It

What could go wrong?:

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair’s department is endorsing a legislated ban on universal criminal background checks as discriminatory to convicted felons. The proposal follows new research indicating the jobless rate for parolees is fifty percent: “Employer bias is a barrier that individuals with criminal records commonly encounter.”

And not everyone is a Christmas-hating jackhole, either

The Federal Court is repealing “Christmas.” Amendments to 1998 Federal Court Rules propose to delete references to the Christmas recess as non-inclusive for lawyers, plaintiffs and defendants who practice other religions or none at all: “Not all litigants before the Courts celebrate Christmas.”

So ye sow, so ye shall reap:

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) is set to let go of 100 staff positions in roles considered to be redundant.

The board revealed the move in a release on Friday afternoon and said a reduction in student enrolment, costs attributed to COVID-19, and the lack of additional funds from ministry of education as the reason.

The cuts include 100 staff – primarily elementary teachers, early childhood educators, and staff impacted by school closures.

Effective immediately, 34 elementary teachers who work within system roles are leaving, having been told they are surplus.

How many of these surplus educators refused to mark spelling?

 Hhhmmm ....

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about:

Russia wants to stretch out imaginary lines on the ocean floor — and below it — and that has one northern security expert worried about consequences for other Arctic countries, such as Canada.

Last week, Russia filed a submission to the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf to extend a claim to the Arctic Ocean seabed. ...

The new submission would push Russia’s claim all the way up to Canada’s exclusive economic zone, an area 200 nautical miles from the coastline, in which Canadians have sole rights to fish, drill and pursue other economic activities.
