Christmas in Kabul

This is not a sign of great change in a war-torn country but it is certainly heart-warming.

It really is nice. It's one of those things were the suppression of other customs and cultures really deprives the people. It cuts them off from life outside their own narrow world. Just seeing a Christmas tree for the first time and seeing how much it means to foreigners during this time of year--that simple symbol can make Muslims in these countries see us Westerners are more human than they have been taught to see us. When deprived of other cultures and customs they are not able to appreciate the rest of the world as good people who take the same pride and joy in their religious observances as Muslims do. If they had more access to the rest of the world, they would grow to respect us more and this would lead to a greater desire for peace. When you cannot see another human as your brother or sister because they are strangers to you, it makes it a lot easier to justify killing them.

It's nice that Christmas- a holiday everyone should be able to enjoy- is present in a country that is still gripped by poverty and backward attitudes.
