While the US Gets Its Act Together, Canada Doubles Down On Stupid

But don't take my word for it:

Federal lawyers offered a low cash settlement to anti-Semite Laith Marouf over thousands he owed taxpayers as a Department of Canadian Heritage consultant, according to an internal memo. Marouf, a Montréal activist who once fantasized on Twitter about shooting Jews, left for Beirut after pocketing $122,661 to fund a national series of lectures on tolerance: “It was estimated that settling at this time would recover around $40,000.”

And how did we fail people who would do this?:

Canada failed Gazan refugees by refusing to let more into the country, Liberal Party leadership contender Frank Baylis said yesterday. The former MP (Pierrefonds-Dollard, Que.) and federal contractor said taxpayers should make it up by rebuilding Palestinian homes: “It’s a form of discrimination we have done against the Palestinian people.”

This Frank Baylis:

Montreal-based Baylis Medical Company Inc., owned by former Quebec Liberal MP Frank Baylis, was awarded a federal contract totalling $237 million to purchase 10,000 ventilators despite the machines having never been "approved in any jurisdiction to date," a Department of Health memo revealed.

"The Government of Canada awarded a contract for approximately $237,300,000 to FTI Professional Grade Inc. for the purchase of 10,000 V4C-560 ventilators which are manufactured by Baylis Medical," a spokesperson for the department said yesterday.

The company was given the green light to make 10,000 ventilators by October 21. Baylis, who serves as chairman for the medical company, served one term as a Liberal MP from 2015 to 2019.According to Blacklock's Reporter, Baylis was a "generous donor" to the Liberal Party, having donated over $66,000 from 2005 onward. The ventilators were not approved until nearly two months after the contract was awarded.

Additionally, contracts given to Baylis’ company include $273,237 towards the medical contract itself, with an additional $422,946 "research contract" with the Department of Industry, totalling $696,183 in taxpayer dollars.

Trump has indiscriminately placed a twenty-five percent tariff on steel and aluminum:

Steel and aluminum prices are expected to jump up to 40 percent under new tariffs invoked yesterday by U.S. President Donald Trump. Similar tariffs in 2018 were blamed for “killing Canadian businesses,” the Commons industry committee was told at the time: “These reckless tariffs threaten tens of thousands of good-paying jobs.”

Why would Trump do that?

Oh, yes

According to the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), more than 760,000 tonnes of melted and poured Chinese steel entered the American market in 2023, while over 750,000 tonnes entered the U.S. the year before.

Those volumes are 20 per cent higher than the current amount of Chinese steel that enters Canada every year.

So, dishonest brokers there.

And what is Justin doing?:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned U.S. Vice-President J.D. Vance that punishing tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum will hurt his home state Ohio, a senior Canadian official said.

Not Trump?

Where is your bravado?

Why aren't you convening Parliament?:

As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with Canada's premiers and works with cabinet to craft his government's response to an unpredictable Trump administration, he's also batting away repeated demands from opposition leaders to recall Parliament.

It’s understandable that with so much going on, Canadians might overlook the fact that the Prime Minister has shut down our Parliament for the most repugnantly self-serving, crassly partisan reason. But we shouldn’t.

It’s our Parliament, not his. And in a time of national crisis, it should be operating for us.

On January 30, 1649, King Charles I of England was beheaded. People from all ranks of society were shocked. The king, chosen by God, was killed by men.

Charles believed in the divine right of kings and felt no deep connection to Magna Carta, first signed in 1215. And he certainly was not fond of the institution spawned by that odious document — Parliament.  He should have kept his thoughts to himself. The High Court of Justice declared that Charles was guilty of “…attempting to uphold in himself an unlimited and tyrannical power to rule according to his will, and to overthrow the rights and liberties of the people.”

Goodness! What was his deep and abiding sin? Charles wanted to have a go at scooping up some land in Europe by fighting in the 30 Years War. But to fight a war he needed to raise taxes to finance the war. And to raise taxes he needed to recall Parliament. And he hated Parliament. He was the king after all. Chosen by God.

I thought of this over the weekend as our prime minister puffed out his chest, put his underwear over his pants and declared that he was, by God, ready to take on the evil Orange Man.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaking at a Black History Month reception in Ottawa this week bragged he can be “ruthless” about doing as he pleases in his last days in office.

Trudeau on January 6 announced his “intention to resign” as prime minister. However, he refused to call an election to let Canadians decide their next leader.

Instead, he prorogued Parliament for nearly three months to give the Liberal party time to scramble to organize a leadership race. The winner of that contest, which will be held March 9, will become Canada’s de facto prime minister — even if an unelected Liberal wins, like Mark Carney.

Meanwhile, Parliament remains prorogued until March 24.
