Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez was beaten because her blog describes life in a Third World dictatorship.
Her blog is right here (in Spanish only).

Why visit a communist hell-hole when you can visit any other country?

I often wonder if they would still go to Cuba (or any other country in the area) is the costs were 3-4 times greater.
Why visit a communist country? Because of the acres of shore lines covered in beautiful white sand, sunshine, cheap drinks and water everywhere.
Then again, you can only get that in the compound or you'll just be paying hundreds of dollars just to be murdered.

To answer the first part of your comment, no. Upper-middle class white people don't tour around Canada because it's cold; they don't do it because it's more expensive than a Third World country where the workers are lucky to get nickels. You have to pay a teen-aged tour guide in Banff minimum wage. You can pay a Cuban teenager nothing. Even if the travel industry fixed prices to an affordable rate, people would still opt for the sunnier, less fair options like Cuba.
I think I sort of answered the second part of your comment.
Murdered. Traveller's diarrhea. Hepatitis. Robbed. Pick your hell.
Very true.
My beef, besides the fact that they are in every way taking advantage of the suffering of others, is that there are many islands in that area where people are free, get paid proper wages and don't live like slaves. These islands are not visited nearly as much.
And there are plenty of places in Canada to go to be warm, even in the winter. Like BC. Sand and sun (all year 'round, everywhere you go) are just bonuses. The real draw is how insanely cheap the trips are.

If one must visit tropical locations, why not those islands you spoke of?
As for Canada, it's ALL good.
