Thomas Jefferson, the Presdident who was the successor to John Adams, was also very enamoured with the idea of "taking the Canadas" and driving the British off the North American continent. Quotations from him suggest that he thought taking Halifax would be a particularly daunting task. Anyone who's seen the Citadel, the old, British fort on the hill in Halifax, would probably concur with that idea when they imagine trying to take it would have been like for invaders 200 years ago.
