Home ownership rates for young people have not declined, and the typical Canadian under 34 is more likely to own a home than young people in other G7 countries, says a Department of Finance report. The 2019 Access To Information memo contradicts CMHC claims: “Youth home ownership rates are relatively high.”
CMHC is spending $250,000 researching a first-ever federal home equity tax. Organizers of the research project earlier likened homeowners to lottery winners whose residences were tax shelters: “The objective is to identify solutions that could level the playing field between renters and owners.”
