Why Are We Still Trading With China?

To wit:

Last week, China’s ambassador to Canada Cong Peiwu threatened 300,000 Canadians in Hong Kong:

“If the Canadian side really cares about the stability and the prosperity in Hong Kong, and really cares about the good health and safety of those 300,000 Canadian passport holders in Hong Kong and the large number of Canadian companies operating in Hong Kong . . . you should support those efforts to fight violent crimes.”

Peiwu was asked if this was a threat.

His response was, “that is your interpretation.”

As I said at the time, there had to be a strong response:

“And the first thing the Canadian government must do is to order Cong Peiwu to leave the country. Canada must make it clear that we will not allow an ambassador to be in this country and threaten our Citizens. Anyone who does so must be ordered to leave.”

Yet, there hasn’t been a strong response.

Instead, there has been the exact opposite:

PATHETIC WEAKNESS.

Some officials made mild criticisms, but nothing of substance has been done.

And of course, Peiwu has not been kicked out of the country.

This China:

China said Monday that it has complained to Canada for allegedly condoning anti-China comments that appeared in Canadian media following controversial remarks made by the Chinese ambassador.

Ties between the countries are at their lowest point in years amid China’s outrage over Canada’s detention of a top executive of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei. Last week, China’s ambassador to Canada, Cong Peiwu, branded pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong as violent criminals and said if Canada grants them asylum it would amount to interference in China’s internal affairs.

“If the Canadian side really cares about the stability and the prosperity in Hong Kong, and really cares about the good health and safety of those 300,000 Canadian passport-holders in Hong Kong, and the large number of Canadian companies operating in Hong Kong SAR, you should support those efforts to fight violent crimes,” Cong said in a video news conference from the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa.

In a normal country, anyone declaring his or her undying love for China would not have been elected and any diplomat or ambassador  who threatened either a citizen or a passport-holder would find himself inside his Louis Vuitton luggage en route to Beijing.

But here we are ...
