The Godless' Delusion:
The militant atheists can own this 'bastion of reason'. He's all theirs.
Biologist and atheist Richard Dawkins is apologizing after saying that it is "immoral" NOT to abort babies with Down syndrome.
The University of Oxford professor took to Twitter yesterday to speak on abortion in Ireland, which is illegal. He advised a woman who wouldn't know what to do if she had a baby with Down syndrome to "abort it and try again" because "it would be immoral to bring it into the world."
Many of his 17,900 followers expressed outrage over the comments, which Dawkins defended as "very civilized (sic)" because fetuses don't have "human feelings."
He also claimed that people shouldn't oppose abortion if they are meat eaters.
On Wednesday, Dawkins apologized on his blog, and shared a longer-than-140-characters response to the woman who initially posed the question to him.
"The choice would be entirely yours and I would never dream of trying to impose my views on you or anyone else," he wrote.
"My phraseology may have been tactlessly vulnerable to misunderstanding, but I can’t help feeling that at least half the problem lies in a wanton eagerness to misunderstand," he concluded the entry.
Dawkins initial statements come in the wake of Ireland's decision to refuse a suicidal rape victim an abortion.
In July, Dawkins caused an uproar when he said that being raped by a stranger is worse than being a victim of date rape. He insisted he did not endorse date rape and was simply laying out an argument.
The militant atheists can own this 'bastion of reason'. He's all theirs.
