The Epoch Times, founded by Chinese immigrants who fled communist oppression in their homeland, has been covering disinformation put out by the Beijing regime for two decades. Since the start of the pandemic, using sources in China, The Epoch Times has been publishing exclusive reports on China’s disinformation and hiding of the facts.
Paul Hambleton, director of journalistic standards at CBC News, said CBC News admits that The Epoch Times didn’t claim that China made the coronavirus as a “bioweapon,” despite having run this accusation in the headline of the first of two articles published by the CBC targeting the Epoch Times special edition.
CBC’s original headline on its first article stated, “‘Racist and inflammatory’: Canadians upset by Epoch Times claim China behind virus, made it as a bioweapon.”
CBC further admits that the claim by an unnamed individual that the special edition was engaged in spreading “hatred” is purely an opinion that “in no way reflects on The Epoch Times.”
Hambleton also said the CBC erred in using the opinion of one single individual as the basis for a headline alleging that Canadians find The Epoch Times to be racist toward Chinese people.
On Jan. 5 copies of The Epoch Times — which looks like a newspaper or broadsheet but is classified as a flyer by Canada Post — came across Sepulveda’s work station.
“I saw this thing, I read it and thought it was trash,” he said. Many of Sepulveda’s colleagues are refugees, many are Chinese, and many felt uncomfortable delivering the flyers.
“I took a stand. I let those things sit in my cart,” he said. He went straight to a manager and told them he would not deliver the flyers.
The next day when he came to work, he was suspended for three days without pay. The role of misinformation whipping people into a frenzy wasn’t lost on Sepulveda, considering that the storming of the Capitol building in Washington D.C. occurred the same day he was suspended.
“It struck me, this is damaging. This can cause a lot of hate, this can cause and incite a lot of anger. Especially with people who are already pissed off that they’re locked up in their houses,” said Sepulveda.
(Sidebar: would these offensive items be the things that were debunked above? Those offensive items?)
Why doesn't the union schlub deliver the paper to the people who not only pay for a subscription but whose taxes pay the aforementioned union schlub?
No one cares what he thinks, anyway.
