Mid-Week Post

Your mid-week relief from isolation ...

Having been forced to walk back from his Hitlerian attempts at power, Justin and his equally corrupt friends settle for a financial aid package that staves off complete economic ruin:

An emergency federal bill to give the government billions of dollars to spend to help anxious workers, families and employers cope with COVID-19 is now law.

Gov. Gen. Julie Payette signed the bill at 12:18 p.m. Eastern time Wednesday, after both the House of Commons and Senate issued speedy approvals earlier in the day.

The bill allows the federal government up to $52 billion in funds to directly help Canadians, including a repackaged aid program for workers who can't work for almost any reason connected to the virus.

That Canada Emergency Response Benefit will offer $2,000 a month in direct support through the Canada Revenue Agency, and is the main reason the cost of direct COVID-19 aid nearly doubled from an estimated $27 billion last week to $52 billion now.

Another $55 billion is on the table in deferred tax payments for business and individuals.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau said the benefits for workers should come as early as the first week of April, while top-ups for child benefits and GST cheques will flow in May.

"There aren't faster ways to get money into Canadians hands," said Morneau.

(Sidebar: but there is a way to hike the carbon tax, eh, Bill?)

Completely overlooked in this entire debate was the fact that no government agency learned or did anything concrete about the SARS epidemic in 2003 (indeed, Justin is dithering on ordering quick-response coronavirus tests because who needs those right now?), that there are (as of this writing) thirty deaths in the country, a million unemployment claims, small businesses that will go under, and the willingness, after some time, to try a stunt like this again. Canadians will forget what transpired in these past few days and, as things grow more and more desperate, will agree to any measure no matter how draconian, wasteful or loony.

This is what a country without check or balances or anything resembling accountability looks like.

This isn't the full extend of Justin's utter contempt for the citizenry who idiotically put him into office.

Yes, it actually gets worse:
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government is about to announce supports to keep journalists working and reporting on the coronavirus crisis.

(Sidebar: this little gem is worth a read.)

**
The leaked document, signed by General Jonathan Vance, states that the Government of Canada is readying to transition into “phase 3,” or “pandemic mitigation” and that the working assumptions for the crisis include that the COVID-19 pandemic “could last 12 months or longer, and may return in multiple waves.” The assumptions also include that “supply chain shortages and transportation disruptions will impact the availability of various medical and non-medical supplies.”

(Sidebar: Soldiers with guns in our streets ... Do they need support of the army?)

Canada will spend millions to help the world’s most desperate people fight COVID-19 because it is in the country’s long-term security interest as well as being the right thing to do, says International Development Minister Karina Gould.

Bullsh--. There is a UN seat somewhere that Justin thinks he will acquire.

Oh, but I thought that quarantining people was wrong somehow:

Most people will be subject to a legally mandatory 14-day quarantine upon entering Canada, and those who skirt the isolation period could face criminal sanctions or fines under the Quarantine Act, the government announced Wednesday.

“The health minister will be using powers that she has under the Quarantine Act beginning at midnight tonight to impose a mandatory 14-day period of isolation on all people coming into Canada from outside,” said Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland during a press conference

The quarantine goes into effect at 11:59pm Wednesday night.

File under - COMPLETE INCOMPETENCE:

If individuals could reason from the limited data they had access to in late January that they should purchase a mask, governments should have come to the same conclusion and taken action to secure a supply of personal protective equipment for health-care workers.

Also - are you sure that you want anything made in China?:

The death toll due to the coronavirus in Spain has surpassed Italy's:

Spain’s universal health care system is a source of national pride and often hailed as a reason for its citizens’ legendary longevity, but the outbreak is exposing its shortcomings, some of which are the result of years of budget cuts. ...

On Wednesday, the number of medical personnel infected was nearly 6,500 nationally, health authorities said, representing 13.6% of the country’s 47,600 total cases and about 1% of the health system’s workforce. At least three health care workers have died.

Awful:

Spanish army troops disinfecting nursing homes have found, to their horror, some residents living in squalor among the infectious bodies of people suspected of dying from the new coronavirus, authorities said Tuesday.

Defence Minister Margarita Robles said the elderly residents were “completely left to fend for themselves, or even dead, in their beds.”

(Sidebar: ¡cabrón!)

She said the discovery over the weekend included several nursing homes but did not name them or say how many bodies were found.

A judicial probe into the horrific discovery was opened Tuesday as Spain announced a record one-day jump of nearly 6,600 new coronavirus infections, bringing the overall total to more than 39,600.

The number of deaths also leaped by a record 514 to almost 2,700, second only to Italy and China.

As bodies piled up, Madrid took over a public skating rink as a makeshift morgue after the city facility overflowed. To date, 1,535 people have died in the hard-hit Spanish capital, more than half of the national total. The capital region has over 12,350 infections.

Remember - they are doing this for the children:

One of the questions in the document asks: “Q: The Board’s email says I should go ahead with e-learning, the OSSTF memos say I shouldn’t. What do I do?”

The union responds: “OSSTF’s position is from the perspective of providing Members with the best protection possible. There are many unknowns at this time and we do not want Members doing something with the best of intentions that may cause difficulty with management in the future.” ...
The union repeats these points multiple times throughout the Q&A, stating elsewhere that: “There is no requirement of you that you work online with your students at this point” and that “there is no requirement at this time for any Member to be engaged in any online learning.”
